Dear practitioners,
Please see the message below from Gary Dellora and Michael Wells....
(from Melbourne email list)
We are communicating to appeal to the Buddhist Community of Melbourne to
seek Buddhist volunteers to assist a renowned Buddhist teacher on his
journey towards death.
The teacher is Laurence Khantipalo who was a Buddhist monk for over 32
years. He was instrumental in founding many centers in Australia and New
Zealand. He is a Pali scholar and a author of Dharma books.
Khantipalo is now categorized by medical staff as being in fully palliative
dementia which is the last stage of vascular dementia. Doctors are amazed
he is still alive, and we are amazed at his sporadic unexpected clarity
manifesting in a wonderful way. He appears to sleep most of the day. He is
being taken care of by the nursing home of Embracia on the Park (Clarinda),
which is where he resides now until the end. The Embracia place is very
nice and they take care of him but Khantipalo requires spiritual care and
presence.
We are requesting please if you would let us know if you can
personally recommend one or more Buddhist volunteers, each of whom will
offer a couple of hours time slot, once every week or two.
We need help for a volunteer to come in once a day to be with Khantipalo.
In this time the volunteer could do some chanting and let him know that a
Dharma friend is with him. Perhaps hold his hand. If he indicates that he
wishes to eat, then feed him if he wishes.
Khantipalo is slowly tending not to eat and drink. For comfort water can be
offered in a spoon to his mouth. Each volunteer will have short "hands-on"
instruction on tasks.
At the moment due to circumstances the full burden of this palliative
spiritual care has fallen on the shoulders of two Dharma practitioners,
Dhammika Pereira and Gary Dellora. Gary and Dhammika are at present doing
this at length every day. This is inherently an unstable "holding pattern "
and in the immediate short and potential longer term more spiritual support
workers on a roster basis are needed. The responsibility of spiritual care
for Khantipalo on an hourly and daily basis cannot solely be carried on two
shoulders, this great honour to support Khantipalo requires the shoulders
of many to assist him on his journey.
Traditionally we have all benefited from Khantipalo's Dharma-dana, now in
his twilight time we must have requietitude[katannuta].
Please contact Gary Dellora at his email [email protected]
Thanking you, yours in the Dharma with much gratitude.
